Are You Monkey Minded?
Most of us here have forgotten about smiling. Who has the time to care and share? We have gotten so lost in the un-necessities and urgencies of life, that the truly important values have been forgotten. Our mental state is clearly reflected on our faces. Why has this happened?
Do we want to get back to the state of childlike carefree-ness and abandon? Do we have time to reflect and take corrective actions? Do we understand that the best changes about life are internal changes? Let us make one thing very clear to ourselves: if we are not proactively trying to lift it out of its current state, it will always remain like that. It will not change and there is no magic wand that can change it overnight.
In reality, our minds are very chaotic…very “monkey-like.” We have such strong involvement in our turbulent minds that hardly anybody is even aware of this state. Most of us are living in an unconscious state, like sleep walkers. What’s the cause of agitations in the mind? The “monkey” lives and thrives there.
All the restlessness of the mind is due to wrong beliefs and conditioning. We are so strongly involved in our beliefs that it is extremely difficult for us to understand that these are merely painful notions, and detaching from them can lead to peace and happiness. Detachment is the key. Learn to not have emotional and mental strings to your thoughts and expectations. Just like a toy when a child is done playing with it, you simply let it go and move on when it’s time to do something else.
We believe that money will bring happiness. Have we not tired enough, and can’t we see the mental state of those who are running after money all the time? We believe that status will give fulfillment. Is it right? Does it happen that those who have it are happy?
Similarly, there are so many other conditionings that we thoughtlessly believe in without having reflected on their validity and without understanding their effects on our state of happiness and fulfillment. It doesn’t have to be this way. Your monkey mind doesn’t have to rule your life. You can have a calm, peaceful mind, and happiness now.
